Could 2009 be the Best and Worst Holiday Season for Videogames Ever?

With E3 just wrapping up its hard to not be excited for all the games set to come out this year, especially in the fall. When you actually look at them all though you’ll likely begin to realize that this fall may in fact be the best one for videogames ever. In terms of quality games that is. Here is just a partial list of what is going to be released this fall, between the end of August and the start of 2010:

Solutions Oriented

With Amazon and Toys R Us muscling in on GameStop’s almost monopoly of buying back videogames, and selling used copies, the discussion of used games has popped up in a lot of the podcasts I listen to again. Now I’m not going to say that it’s not fair that video game developers/publishers don’t get a cut from these sales, because it is fair. Which is to say this is not a industry vs. retailer issue, but rather a secondary market/right of first sale issue for consumers.

1GO Awards 2008

Figured since I did these last year I should do them again this year, although this year I’ve decided to not make it completely about videogames since the site isn’t completely about videogames anymore. Also I had a hard time coming up with nominees for all the categories I came up with last year. Also I decided to be lazy and not do any write ups for the awards like I did last year, so anyway on with the awards.

The Post-”Brick and Mortar” Game Store World

For about 2 decades the brick and mortar video game stores like GameStop/Electronic Boutique, and even Funcoland, (in the beginning,) have always been great places for gamers. In that they allowed you to pre-order the games you wanted, and they let you trade in your used games to money which you could then use to buy more games. As a kid growing up that was great, since you generally don’t have any sort of steady income, so being able to trade in a few games was always helpful when you wanted a new one, but this practice has always been a sore spot for the game publishers and developers.

My Last Post About Rock Band

I think that after this I am done talking about Rock Band, and it beating Guitar Hero after this, because I don’t think there is anything else they could to further destroy GH. Well at least that’s worth mentioning.

Basically Harmonix announced with Rock Band 2 that all past and future DLC will work with both Rock Band 1 and 2. And now I’ve read today that all the Rock Band 1 music that is on the disc will be available for free as DLC for Rock Band 2 (I imagine it’s free for those who have the RB1.)

What is Next Gen?

It’s been about a year and a half since the Xbox 360 launched in North America, but even before then there was a lot of talk about next gen gaming. The term is still being used for this new console generation (most likely because the next generation of consoles hasn’t been announced yet,) but although the term is still used it doesn’t seem as though people really know what is next gen gaming.

1GO Awards 2007

Although I haven’t completely finished Mass Effect, I feel that any more of the game wouldn’t likely alter my opinion of it or alter my thoughts on the awards in anyway. I did play and finish Uncharted, so I am considering it in some categories where I hadn’t before. So below, after the cut, will be all the categories as well as the winners, plus a little write up on why I chose it as the winner over the other game nominees.

Super Mario Galaxy (Did I play a different game from everyone else?)

I wanted to write this article on Friday, but I thought it would be best to wait and do it as my big weekend article to give myself a chance to put more thought into it, because as it seems from Gamerankings.com my opinion seems to greatly differ from the rest of the world when it comes to Super Mario Galaxy. So I’m going to just get it right out of the way here, and feel free to read on to understand why I’m saying this, ok? Super Mario Galaxy is an average game.

Super Mario Galaxy (First Impressions)

I spent some time trying to decide what I wanted to talk about in this update, but I kept coming back to Mario Galaxy. I picked it up last night after work and spent almost 2 hours playing it. I got through the first set of galaxies, so I’m most likely through the “tutorial” portion of the game so far. Now the reason why I’m somewhat hesitant to talk about the game right now, is that I feel like what I’m going to say could potential cause me to catch some flak, as it were.

Rock Band and Guitar Hero: Similar games with very different philosophies

The big “battle” gearing up this year seems to be between Guitar Hero III and Rock Band. Even though they are “battling,” it seems as though both games have taken to adopting different philosophies, not just in how the game should be played, but also in the business models for them.
