My first t-shirt is now for sale/pre-order! I’m really happy with how it looks. I basically came up … Continue Reading

Could 2009 be the Best and Worst Holiday Season for Videogames Ever?

With E3 just wrapping up its hard to not be excited for all the games set to come out this year, especially in the fall. When you actually look at them all though you’ll likely begin to realize that this fall may in fact be the best one for videogames ever. In terms of quality games that is. Here is just a partial list of what is going to be released this fall, between the end of August and the start of 2010:

1GO Awards 2008

Figured since I did these last year I should do them again this year, although this year I’ve decided to not make it completely about videogames since the site isn’t completely about videogames anymore. Also I had a hard time coming up with nominees for all the categories I came up with last year. Also I decided to be lazy and not do any write ups for the awards like I did last year, so anyway on with the awards.

The Post-”Brick and Mortar” Game Store World

For about 2 decades the brick and mortar video game stores like GameStop/Electronic Boutique, and even Funcoland, (in the beginning,) have always been great places for gamers. In that they allowed you to pre-order the games you wanted, and they let you trade in your used games to money which you could then use to buy more games. As a kid growing up that was great, since you generally don’t have any sort of steady income, so being able to trade in a few games was always helpful when you wanted a new one, but this practice has always been a sore spot for the game publishers and developers.

Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney

I just finished Ace Attorney 4 last night (otherwise known as Apollo Justice,) and figured I should write up a little something about it considering that I reviewed Ace Attorney 3 (Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations.) I was a little worried that the game wasn’t going to focus on Phoenix anymore, since you grow to love him over the course of his Trilogy, but I can say that I’m perfectly happy with this new set of characters. As much as I wanted to see what had happened to the old characters in the 7 years between 3 and 4, the story and characters in this one actually made me not care so much about them, because I really became engrossed in what was happening in this one.

1GO Awards 2007

Although I haven’t completely finished Mass Effect, I feel that any more of the game wouldn’t likely alter my opinion of it or alter my thoughts on the awards in anyway. I did play and finish Uncharted, so I am considering it in some categories where I hadn’t before. So below, after the cut, will be all the categories as well as the winners, plus a little write up on why I chose it as the winner over the other game nominees.

Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations

I stayed up a little late a few nights back in order to finish the last case of Phoenix Wright 3. Now I have been a big fan of the Phoenix Wright games. The first one is awesome, and full of great writing and characters, the second game (And Justice for All,) is good but the cases don’t feel as good as the first game. But it’s still a good game, and it introduces Pearls, and she’s awesome from then on.

Video Games as a Storytelling Medium

Long weekends are great things, especially when you have a couple games you need to get done. I wanted to get most, if not all the games, I haven’t finished well finished before I pick up Super Mario Galaxy tomorrow. So I finally got around to finishing Half Life 2: Episode 2, Naruto: Rise of a Ninja, and I played some more Phoenix Wright 3, but didn’t finish it. I also watched Ratatouille (Pixar’s latest movie for those that haven’t heard of it.) After finishing most of that stuff it got me thinking a little bit about how storytelling is in video games, and the future of video games as a storytelling medium.

How Sony (or anyone else) can defeat the DS.

Nintendo has long ruled the hand held games market, as everyone knows, but Sony has somehow managed to carve a little niche for themselves with the PSP even though the DS is selling like they are almost giving it away. If anything this shows that the DS doesn’t provide everything people want in a hand held gaming console.

Licensed Games: The Economics Behind Why They Suck

Video games created from movie, and TV licenses have long been apart of the industry. Even though somehow 99% of them tend to be complete and utter crap. The few games that don’t, are certainly the single needle in the haystacks of the state of Kansas. But why? Why is it that so often game companies license these properties, and yet somehow are unable to produce either a good or successful game from them?
