Finished my finalized list for my little games of the year awards thing. I’m be curious to hear what people think about them.

It’s that time of the year again.

I’ve always sort of enjoyed the whole Game of the Year stuff you start seeing around this time of the year. Not for any intellectual reason, its more of a guilty pleasure I guess, since these awards don’t really provide much substance it’s just “this is game of the year, this is the game of the year on Wii, this is game of the year in this genre, etc.” It really doesn’t do all that much, and is rather generic, and provides no real recognition for the people working on the games. At least I think so.

Tidbit #2

The tidbit comes back, because there is a really interesting article over at The Escapist about Valve. Seems the Zero Punctuation guy, Yahtze, was invited to Seattle to tour the Valve offices. It’s a really interesting read, especially how Valve goes about doing stuff and tackling any problems that come along.

If anything it further proves the uniqueness of the Valve guys, and how its very unlikely any other developer could do what they do, at least not without running out of money.

Also if you don’t already you should watch the Zero Punctuation stuff, it’s both hilarious … Continue Reading

Why Mass Effect and PS3 are made for each other.

Yesterday was a pretty crazy day [Editor's note-- wrote this on/for Wednesday] with Rock Band, and Mass Effect (along with some other games,) coming out. I actually ended up taking a half day at work to make sure I could get everything, and have enough time to play them. Most of that time was devoted to playing around with Rock Band, but somehow I managed to play around 4 hours of Mass Effect. I don’t feel like I’ve played enough yet still to give my impressions on the game, but I have realized a couple things about the game and the future of the series that I did want to talk about.

Multimedia Video Game Storytelling: When it works, and when it doesn’t.

I’ve been looking forward to playing Mass Effect for a while now, and now I’m finally going to get a chance to play it tomorrow. Now for as much as I was looking forward to the game to start with (mostly because its Bioware and there stuff is awesome,) I actually really started to look forward to it after reading the Mass Effect book, Mass Effect: Revelation.

Super Mario Galaxy (Did I play a different game from everyone else?)

I wanted to write this article on Friday, but I thought it would be best to wait and do it as my big weekend article to give myself a chance to put more thought into it, because as it seems from Gamerankings.com my opinion seems to greatly differ from the rest of the world when it comes to Super Mario Galaxy. So I’m going to just get it right out of the way here, and feel free to read on to understand why I’m saying this, ok? Super Mario Galaxy is an average game.

Tidbit

This isn’t my real weekend update, but I figured that I should mention this. I guess this could possibly spawn a little ongoing post thing.

Anyway I got my Games for Windows mag in the mail Friday, and read it at work today (I hate saying I work on Saturdays.) Why I mention this is that there is a great Q&A with Valve. They talk to Gabe Newell (the founder of Valve,) and get after thoughts with some of the development teams of Portal, HL2 Episode 2, and Team Fortress 2. According to the magazine page they are going … Continue Reading

Rock Band and Guitar Hero: Redux

Harmonix/EA/MTV finally announced this week the prices for the Rock Band DLC, which work in line with what I was talking about in my previous post about Guitar Hero and Rock Band. They are fairly cheaply priced ($0.99 to $2.99) and they are releasing new songs every week from launch onwards (or so it seems so far from what has been announced.) But this post isn’t about me just reiterating what I’ve already talked about, but rather what I would like to see done with these downloads (as unlikely as it is.)

Super Mario Galaxy (First Impressions)

I spent some time trying to decide what I wanted to talk about in this update, but I kept coming back to Mario Galaxy. I picked it up last night after work and spent almost 2 hours playing it. I got through the first set of galaxies, so I’m most likely through the “tutorial” portion of the game so far. Now the reason why I’m somewhat hesitant to talk about the game right now, is that I feel like what I’m going to say could potential cause me to catch some flak, as it were.

Video Games as a Storytelling Medium

Long weekends are great things, especially when you have a couple games you need to get done. I wanted to get most, if not all the games, I haven’t finished well finished before I pick up Super Mario Galaxy tomorrow. So I finally got around to finishing Half Life 2: Episode 2, Naruto: Rise of a Ninja, and I played some more Phoenix Wright 3, but didn’t finish it. I also watched Ratatouille (Pixar’s latest movie for those that haven’t heard of it.) After finishing most of that stuff it got me thinking a little bit about how storytelling is in video games, and the future of video games as a storytelling medium.
